Apron Recollection by Cheye Pagel

I always love to go to my grandmother’s cabin because that’s where she’s teaching me how to sew on this antique treadle sewing machine. She and I can spend two days just cutting out cloth and sewing clothes for my dolls. What’s great about my grandmother is her patience. If I take a slow time to learn something, she just takes her time teaching me. Sitting with her and talking is my favorite thing to do. I wish I had a year to just help her bake and sew.

My grandmother got me involved with aprons. She lives in Alabama, and when she’s there, she sews clothes for me and when I got into baking, she made me aprons in lots of sizes. I remember for one Christmas she sent me this little apron that was red and had little white hearts on it. That apron was my favorite out of all of them. I believe my aprons keep me with my grandmother all the time, even when someday she’s gone forever.
